FC Barcelona Set To Battle Liverpool For Virgil van Dijk

Barcelona to anger Liverpool again by moving for top Reds target

While both Chelsea and Liverpool are attractive options for the defender, Barcelona are considered to be leading the race to sign him as Southampton would prefer to let van Dijk join an overseas club as opposed to a Premier League outfit.

Manchester City are also understood to have been circling, without following through with their interest, but The Mirror reports that Barcelona have serious aspirations of signing the former Celtic defender.

The same article states that the La Liga giants are ready to rival Liverpool for the Dutch centre-half following the disappointment of missing out on Philippe Coutinho in the summer.

Newcastle weighed the move up and baulked at the £13 million that Van Dijk eventually cost Southampton - with the Dutchman now being touted as a potential £70m target for Liverpool.

Liverpool were strongly interested in the defender during the summer but were forced to pull out of a bid for him after Southampton accused them of making an illegal approach for the 26-year-old.

Barcelona endured a frustrating summer, too, after Liverpool refused to sell Brazil global Philippe Coutinho to the Camp Nou outfit.

Southampton have remained firm about not selling Van Dijk, but the centre-back recently hinted his situation could change in the January transfer window.

The Liverpool number 10 has since scored three goals in his last four appearances in the Reds team.
