Chelsea boss Antonio Conte: 'I want to keep David Luiz in defence'

Zaha returned to training last week

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says France midfielder N'Golo Kante will be sidelined for three weeks after suffering a hamstring injury on worldwide duty.

Michy Batshuayi could replace Morata in the starting XI, or manager Antonio Conte could use Eden Hazard, Pedro or even Cesc Fabregas as a false 9.

The former Leicester City midfielder was forced off during France's 1-0 victory over Bulgaria on Saturday [7 October] after suffering a hamstring injury.

After winning the 2016/17 Premier League season at a canter, things have gone from bad to worse for Chelsea FC - missing out on several summer targets, and not being able to replace players departing Stamford Bridge. "We have three injured players".

"I hope to have Morata back against Roma", Conte said at a press conference.

"Drinkwater is progressing well, but he will take time to recover". We must have patience with him and with this calf problem.

'Kante, we are going to do a scan next week to check his situation, if he is improving.

"Kante has a muscular problem and he is going to remain out of action for 20 days at least".

"We are not lucky in this period. We have only Bakayoko and Fabregas available", Conte pointed out.

He added: "We have to approach these seven games without Kante and at this moment in time without Drinkwater".

David Luiz performed impressively on his one midfield start this season against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in August, but Conte added that he is reluctant to move the Brazil global out of his normal role in the middle of Chelsea's back three unless he is left with no other choice.

The 48-year-old told reporters: "We have to adapt a player in Luiz in midfield who is very important as a central defender". Maybe this scan will be better than the one before. "If I can, I prefer to not change a lot as you find a solution and you lose something with the defence", Conte said.
