This is a great accomplishment in a year where the festival had 7,923 entries from 2,217 USA breweries, the most they have ever received. Though Texas, and often San Antonio in particular, has always been looked at as behind the rest of the country when it comes to small and independent breweries putting out quality craft beer, the Lone Star State has won between 10-15 medals yearly in the last three GABF competitions.

The total of 38 medals for Colorado beer makers was the second-highest total of any state, trailing only the 56 medals won by California brewers.

"When you open a new brewery, in order to get someone's attention, you need to be cutting edge", he said. Uberbrew's Canü won the silver medal in the American-Style Cream Ale category.

Taft's won a gold medal for its Vienna-style lager, which is called Gustov. This is the third GABF medal for Amber Ale and fourth for Weedwacker.

Regional brewers continued to show well at the 31st annual competition with 14 entries listed among the medal winners.

Of the thousands of applicants, three Cincinnati-area breweries took home gold medals: Taft's Ale House, Fifty West Brewing Co. and Brink Brewing Co.

But more often than not, the day went to Colorado breweries whose selections as winners out of the 7,923 beers entered into competition might have turned some heads.
