Attorney General Jeff Sessions says the Department of Justice's organized crime task force will destroy the MS-13 gang "just like we took Al Capone off the streets".

Sessions has designated MS-13 as a priority for the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, which brings together prosecutors from the Department of Justice with investigators from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the IRS, Postal Service Inspectors and the Coast Guard.

Some MS-13 cases have drug connections, but "you'd be hard-pressed to come up with evidence that MS-13 is part of a cartel", he said.

Sessions announced that he authorizes them to utilize every "lawful tool to investigate MS-13".

"Now they will go after MS-13 with a renewed vigor and a sharpened focus", Mr Sessions said, referring to the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces, which brings together a coalition of federal prosecutors from various agencies in government.

But its true rise began after members were deported back to El Salvador in the 1990s.

Capone, a Brooklyn-born gangster who went on to help rule the Chicago underworld, eluded the feds until they finally nailed him on tax evasion in the 1930s.

The change will mean that the task force can now get involved in a broad range of cases involving MS-13, also known as Mara Salvatrucha, including anything from murder prosecutions to firearms violations.

President Donald Trump in July spoke about the Island's MS-13 violence at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood in July, saying that its streets had turned to "bloodstained killing fields" that are "under siege".

Mr Trump claimed earlier this year that his administration had deported about half of all MS-13 gang members in the United States, but that claim appears to be misleading.

"MS-13 is particularly violent".

Repeating a refrain he's often used as he's promoted the Justice Department's anti-gang campaign around the country, Sessions said that while MS-13's motto is "kill, rape and control", the Department has "a motto too: justice for victims and consequences for criminals".
