Anthony Martial starts ahead of Marcus Rashford

Certain outlets suggested that the defensive trio of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly would line up ahead of David De Gea on Saturday afternoon but several eyebrows were raised when Bailly didn't even make the matchday squad against Liverpool.

Mourinho told reporters ahead of kick-off that Bailly had suffered an injury during the global break.

"I don't think we have many options", the boss told Sky Sports.

Bailly sustained an unspecified problem as the Ivory Coast competed in World Cup qualifying action and Rashford was withdrawn during England's win in Lithuania.

Mourinho had already suffered the setback of losing Marouane Fellaini after the midfielder picked up a ligament injury while playing in World Cup qualifiers with Belgium.

"Fellaini was injured with the national team, Bailly was injured with the national team and Rashford was injured with the national team".

However, Mourinho will now turn his attention to how many of who out of the three, if any, will be fit enough to take the field this coming Wednesday, when the Red Devils travel to 54-year-old's home nation to take on Benfica in the Champions League.

Victor Lindelöf is another option, and Mourinho is willing to use his £30.7m summer signing in European games more so than in domestic fixtures, due to the different style of play.

Nemanja Matic does start for United against Liverpool. United were fortunate that Sadio Mane was unavailable for Liverpool, the visitors wouldn't have been able to cope with the former-Southampton man without Bailly.
