Actor Anupam Kher appointed new Chairman of FTII

Kher said Indian filmmakers were returning to the'simplicity of stars like Basu Chatterjee

It was during a Facebook Live with Bollywood Hungama that Mr Kher was congratulated by a fan for becoming the FTII Chairman and he was totally surprised.

Only last month Chauhan hit back at Kher citing a newspaper report saying FTII had seen "improvement in some aspects during Chauhan's tenure". He was also the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama. However, his appointment was severely criticized by the students of FTII.

Not only students at FTII, Gajendra Chauhan's appointment was criticised by the political parties too.

As Anupam Kher comes in as FTII Chairman, we take a look at the controversy surrounding Gajendra Chauhan's appointment.

Also, he is not only limited to Bollywood, the actor also frequently performs in theatres and plays. He was conferred with Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.

Although Kher has strong connections with BJP, he was a vocal critic of government's appointment of his predecessor Gajendra Chauhan.

"I would like to thank the government and the Information and Broadcasting Ministry", she said. They argued that Chauhan's most noted work - the role of Yudhishthira in the hugely popular Mahabharat TV series produced by BR Chopra - is not something which makes him eligible enough to carry the stature of FTII chairman.

On his appointment, he said that it was a sense of achievement and responsibility.

Anupam, who began his acting career with "Saaransh" in 1984, also has his own acting institute Actor Prepares. Chauhan, who was appointed on the post on June 9, 2015, stepped down in March this year. During the politically charged agitation by the students, several political leaders had also visited FTII campus in Pune.
