Warner Bros. seeks Leonard Dicaprio to play the Joker, reports say

DiCaprio has a long and storied filmography that includes many award-winning, well-received and financially successful films, but he has yet to star in a superhero movie or a comic book adaptation.

One person who isn't thrilled about this Joker origin movie is Jared Leto, who played the character in Suicide Squad and is getting his own Joker spin-off movie with Margot Robbie.

Last week's announcement that Martin Scorsese will produce an origin story for The Joker for Warner Bros, which Todd Phillips of "The Hangover" will direct, took many cinephiles by surprise.

The Scorsese connection is certainly strong however, given how frequently the pair have teamed up on films including Shutter Island, Gangs of NY and The Departed.

Leonardo DiCaprio is the flawless person to play such a complicated character. After the character's debut in Suicide Squad, a solo movie for The Joker always appeared to be on the cards. The actor has proven his worth through the vast catalog of films he's been in, including Titanic, Django Unchained, The Great Gatsby, The Revenant and the aforementioned projects, to name a few.

It's an ambitious gambit, since DiCaprio is about as A-list as they come and isn't known for taking on franchise movies. Whether it's planning a Batgirl movie when The Batman is in a fog of uncertainty, thinking Harley Quinn and Gotham City Sirens was a good idea, talk of a Joker origin movie that's not connected to the DCEU... it just seems like someone handed a monkey a gun.

Todd Phillipsis now co-writing the script with 8 Mile's Scott Silver and will co-produce with Martin Scorsese. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros.is aware of the risks of audience confusion. The movie is still in its development phase with confirmed title yet, but it looks like the project will be coming from Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, directors and executive producers of the hit NBC drama "This Is Us" and the 2011 film "Crazy, Stupid, Love".
