Toyota farewells the FJ Cruiser with beige Final Edition variant

The 2018 Toyota Prado is expected to arrive in Australia by November

Toyota Australia has unveiled the new, 2018 LandCruiser Prado, which brings in a new-look front end and updated design elements, increased technology and features, and amped up interior quality. So, while it's been around since 1951, the Land Cruiser is slowly becoming a model in a niche - but that hasn't stopped the Japanese automaker to proudly present it in front of the worldwide audience of the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Externally this update is described by Toyota as "more agile and dynamic", two qualities that are famously hard to quantify in sheet metal. In profile, the auto looks different thanks to a taller front bumper plus realigned wing lines and bumpers, all on the same horizontal axis.

Despite sharing a name with the Land Cruiser sold here in the USA, the Prado is the mid-size member of the Land Cruiser lineup that is sold here as the Lexus GX. New taillight clusters and a smaller rear number plate garnish complete the look. It's now 60 millimeters (2.3 inches) longer than its predecessor, and comes with 17 to 19 inches alloy wheels as well as LED technology for the brake lights.

Inside 2018 Land Cruiser's interior features a revised dashboard that incorporates new instrument binnacle and center console designs. The grille's apertures have been made as large as possible for optimum engine cooling, while the headlamp main beams are positioned inboard to avoid damage when driving off-road. Of course not - although this new vehicle does get the larger steering wheel from the V8 model, so you can sit in the driver's seat making duggadugga noises and pretend.

Power for base models comes from a 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine making 174 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic.

More significant tweaks lie under the skin, where Toyota's Safety Sense driver assistance pack is now standard across the Prado range, bringing a collision avoidance package with autonomous emergency braking and a blind spot monitor to every model.
