Tom Price Reportedly Spent $60000 on Private Jets Last Week

Donald Trump's Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price has come under fire after Politico reported late Tuesday that the Republican politician has used private jets for government business five times in the last week - including for a 125-mile trip from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.

Kathleen Sebelius, who served as HHS secretary under former President Barack Obama, told Politico she only took private planes to remote areas that required chartered aviation.

On another trip, three other flights took him to a ME resort for a discussion with a health care CEO, a health center in New Hampshire, and then back to Washington, D.C. And HHS officials declined to respond to inquiries about who paid for the travel.

HHS Secretary Tom Price makes a statement on health care at The White House on July 24, 2017 in Washington, DC.

Price's actions, however, contradict his own previous comments on the issue.

Several current and former Health and Human Services staffers told Politico that Price has been using private jets for domestic travel for months. "I find it hard to believe he couldn't find a suitable commercial flight to Philadelphia".

In 2009, Price called the use of private jets by members of Congress "fiscal irresponsibility run amok" and criticized a colleague who had argued they were necessary for department heads like the secretary of Defense.

The Politico report comes as Price himself continues to lobby for deep cuts within the HHS budget.

Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said last week that his staff had explored the idea of a military jet to fly him and his wife, Louise Linton, to their honeymoon in Europe over the summer to ensure he had access to secure communications.
