Tillerson, Zarif spoke directly at Iran nuclear talks

UN General Assembly 2017

The nuclear deal between Iran and world powers does not strictly prohibit Iran from developing missiles but after the deal came into effect last year, the U.N. Security Council adopted a resolution calling on Iran not to take any actions related to ballistic missiles "designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons" for eight years.

But if a collapse in the Iran deal damages the credibility of any USA counteroffer to North Korea, might the diplomatic route fail and leave the threat of devastating conflict?

Secretary Tillerson conceded that reports from the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), "continue to confirm that Iran is in technical compliance with the agreement".

"It would be a great pity if this agreement were to be destroyed by rogue newcomers to the world of politics; the world will have lost a great opportunity".

President Donald Trump said Wednesday he has made a decision on whether to walk away from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal with Iran but refused to say what it is, setting the stage for a particularly contentious meeting of the parties to the agreement.

Rouhani, who won a second presidential term earlier this year, said Iran would not be the first to violate the agreement, but that it would take unspecified steps if others did so.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday that the USA imposition of unilateral sanctions on Iran was "illegitimate and undermines the collective nature of global efforts".

Reuters news agency said one audience member covered his face with his hands, and that loud, startled murmurs filled the hall in response.

"If Trump removes Obama's legacy from US Government's record he'll be discrediting the United States across the globe". USA sanctions alone will have a much limited impact than a coordinated and wide-ranging Western sanctions.

Iran has repeatedly stressed that it needs defensive weapons to protect the nation, however the United States and Israel believe its arsenal are a threat to the Middle East's security.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, speaking at a press conference following his speech at the United Nations, said that a Us betrayal of the deal will make future negotiations impossible.

The Iranian Regime's devastating impact on the Middle East was also addressed by National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley at a joint conference at the White House on Friday, September 15.

U.S. allies in Europe, along with many of Trump's critics in Washington, fear this could trigger a new Middle East arms race even as the world faces an aggressive nuclear-armed Pyongyang.

Several current or former U.S. politicians who favour a tougher stance on Iran also spoke, including independent former U.S. Sen.

Other than Iran and the USA, the other signatories of the accord are Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany.

"Trump's ignorant hate speech belongs in medieval times - not the 21st Century UN - unworthy of a reply", Zarif said on Twitter.

"Extremely concerned by reports of Iran missile test, which is inconsistent with United Nations resolution 2231".

Part of the agreement dictates that the USA president must "re-certify" every 90 days whether the Iranians are in compliance with the terms. If he does not, Congress has 60 days to decide whether to reimpose sanctions waived under the deal.
