Shakib granted break from Tests by BCB

Mahmudullah back for South Africa Test series, Shakib and Nasir off the squad

Bangladesh star Shakib Al-Hasan has requested a six-month break from Test cricket.

Akram Khan, the BCB's cricket operations chairperson, said: "Shakib wrote a letter to us asking for a six-month break". After the two-match Test series, Bangladesh will play three ODIs and two T20Is against South Africa, with the second T20I on October 29 marking the end of the tour.

The loss of Shakib, who has arguably been Bangladesh's best player since he made his worldwide debut in 2006, will be a big blow to the Tigers as they aim to build on their recent Test series draw at home against Australia.

According to espncricinfo, Shakib will be allowed to rest during Bangladesh's tour of South Africa, which begins later this month.

"He will not be traveling with the team but he can tell us what he decides to do".

"I respect his decision but of course it is very hard to replace him", Minhajul said.

He added that Shakib would be welcome back into the team whenever he wished.

His request for the Test break comes amid concerns over player fatigue, as well as criticism that players are prioritising earning money over representing their countries.

The victory was Bangladesh's first in the longest format against Australia.

"We included Mahmudullah because he can do well overseas, where the ball comes first on to the bat". The second Test starts on Oct 6 in Bloemfontein.
