Rays hope new 'home' field helps against Yankees

In 1998 Terry Collins and the Angels had a road game against the Yankees relocated to Shea Stadium after a beam fell at Yankee Stadium

He not only pitched six scoreless innings, giving up only one hit, he also provided his own offense, going two-for-three with a pair of RBIs in a win over the Brewers. The Rays (71-74) dropped them four games behind the Twins in the race for the second wild card. Rays RHP Nathan Eovaldi (Tommy John surgery) tossed a ideal inning for Double-A Montgomery on Sunday in his first game action since last August. He retired 12 of 13 between the first and fifth, and he set down eight straight before Hechavarria's homer. "It didn't feel like we're the home team", Rays reliever Steve Cishek said.

Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Brad Miller is starting against the New York Yankees on Tuesday. With the win Monday, the Yankees increased their lead to four games over the idle Minnesota Twins in the race for the American League's first wild-card spot while moving within three games of the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox, who also were off. Alex Colome closed for his 44th save in 49 chances.

"So if you've got power and are able to watch us, great, and hopefully we're able to give you a couple of hours of excitement".

Rays manager Kevin Cash says "from what I've heard, the Trop had some minor damages" and adds "I'm optimistic that we'll get there". "But we've been talking about it for six weeks now, trying to find a way to win five, six, seven games in a row".

The Rays occupied the Mets' spacious clubhouse, wore white uniforms and batted last, and the public-address announcer greeted them with "Please welcome the Tampa Bay Rays".

The result pleased the decidedly pro-Yankees crowd of 15,327 that took advantage of $25 tickets in the lower bowl of the stadium usually occupied by the New York Mets. The chants of "Let's go, Yankees" started before leadoff man Brett Gardner stepped in, and echoed for most of the evening.

"I'm sure a lot of them that may be up here are dealing with the same things I had to worry about", he said. "We had a pretty good turnout".

"It's not the most ideal situation, but it's definitely not the worst", said Rays ace Chris Archer. The Yankees captured the series opener 5-1 Monday.

Only the first run of the inning was earned against Odorizzi (8-8), who allowed three hits and three walks while striking out five over 3 2/3 innings.
