Students celebrating their Junior Cert results could face breath tests this evening.

The overall number sitting the exams rose by 2.3% this year to 61,654. A total of 240 obtained a grade A in ten or more subjects compared with 423 in 2016.

The results will show how students fared in the new English marking system.

"The students appreciate the hard work from the teachers and they were quite anxious opening the results this morning, but the six lads are over the moon today", he added. "Students who received their results today are the first to benefit from this new broader assessment process".

The President of Teachers' Union of Ireland has said the union will be monitoring the results of the English exam. "I am sure this year's Junior Cert students have done themselves and their schools proud and I wish them all the very best for their futures".

Niamh Gallagher, Chief Executive Officer of Drinkaware, observed: "Family members, in particular parents, are the single strongest influence on young people's attitudes towards alcohol".

The Junior Cert results will be available online from 4pm, while students will be able to collect results from their schools throughout the day.
