North Korea's nuclear missile program has been progressing rapidly in recent years.

North Korea's latest ballistic missile launch over Japan was only fired at half its range, according to South Korea's defence ministry, the Yonhap news agency reported on Thursday (Aug 31).

"In response to this illegal action, Japan and the United Kingdom agree to work together to counter this threat, and to work with others in the worldwide community to strengthen pressure against North Korea, including by increasing the pace of sanctions implementation and working towards the adoption of a new and effective resolution at the UNSC", it added.

"As we leave the EU, we will work to quickly establish a new economic partnership between the United Kingdom and Japan based on the terms of the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement", May will say according to advanced extracts of her speech.

Meanwhile, the USA has been participating in joint military exercises with South Korea - an issue that has always been a frustration for Jong Un's regime and a reason used to justify its ongoing weapons programs.

To diversify and multiply its missile interceptors, the ministry is also seeking to add the land-based fixed Aegis Ashore missile-defense system, while considering an option of the mobile and more costly Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD.

The freshly-released stamps are less visually aggressive to the ones issued following another test launch on July 4, which portrayed warheads targeting the U.S. Capitol and a fist crushing a U.S. missile.

The United States often sends its warplanes to South Korea, mostly for patrols, when animosity rises on the Korean Peninsula, which is technically in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

The US president also tweeted Wednesday that talking "is not the answer" when it comes to Pyongyang.

A joint mediation effort put forward by China and Russian Federation would involve a mutual pause in both missile tests by North Korea as well as the joint South Korean-US military exercises by Seoul.

The two leaders are expected to discuss the possibility of further sanctions on North Korea, May's office said.

"We see China as being the key in this", she told reporters, echoing calls from Donald Trump who has been trying to persuade Chinese president Xi Jinping to help thwart Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

Elsewhere in the budget, the ministry will keep the costly US -made unmanned reconnaissance aircraft Global Hawk and is asking for 14.4 billion yen ($130 million) in assembly cost.

Kim Jong Un said his nation has drawn a lesson "again that it should show action, not talk, to the USA imprudently denying the (North's) initiative measure for easing the extreme tension" and stressed that it will continue to watch America's demeanor toward the North and decide its future actions accordingly.

"We think Japan is obliged to explain its real intention to the worldwide community", Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a regular news briefing Thursday.

May arrived in Japan on Wednesday on a three-day official visit to the country, marked by the escalated North Korean threat.

"My visit today is a sign of the growing cooperation and partnership that we have on defense matters", May said in comments broadcast on Japanese TV.
