NJ crews head to FL to assist in hurricane recovery

Red Cross taking donations for hurricane relief

As Florida braces for Hurricane Irma, Texas is still picking up the pieces from Harvey.

The Blade is partnering with WTVG-TV, Channel 13, and the American Red Cross today for a telephone bank to raise money and provide disaster relief for victims of Hurricane Irma, which made landfall Sunday in Florida. The Red Cross is also operating a larger shelter at the Columbus Civic Center, which is holding more than 500 evacuees, Mayor Tomlinson said in a press release announcing the opening the second shelter. "Generous donations from ADGP members are essential to our ability to fulfill the mission of the Red Cross". The supplies include cots, blankets, ready-to-eat meals, comfort kits, and cleaning supplies. "You're meeting a lot of people that this is the worst thing that's ever happened to them, and they may come into the situation with other issues as well", she recalled.

The FDNY Disaster Assistance Response Team (D.A.R.T.) is also joining the effort.

" I just want to go down and make a difference with them, be able to talk to them and see what we can do to help them to start the recovery process and be better", said Smith.

They need volunteers, and they need money.

High-image recognition tools and online comparison with previous imagery may help identify areas with the most damage and allow the extent of damages to be understood more quickly. That's why the Northern Miami Valley Ohio Chapter of the American Red Cross is holding a "Zero to Hero" fast-track training course for new Red Cross disaster volunteers who are interested in deploying to assist with Hurricane Harvey or Hurricane Irma.
