Nigerian Military Denies Declaring IPOB Terrorist Organisation

President Buhari reportedly signs Proclamation Proscribing IPOB

Tukur Buratai stated that the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), did not say that IPOB was a terrorist organisation in the country.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) had, last Friday, declared the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), as a "militant and terrorists organization and called on parents, unsuspecting parents not to allow their children to be brainwashed into joining the organization".

It accused the Federal Government of having a secret agenda to exterminate the Igbo race, adding that the Abia State Commissioner of Police was playing a rehashed script.

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has said that he would not dethrone the father of the Independent People of Biafra, IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, as being called for.

Buratai, who maintained that the army was under no pressure as was being speculated in some quarters said, "You see you said political pressure, you should understand the context by which the Nigerian Army is operating". Until his death, he was a committed member of IPOB.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported earlier that the President of the Nigerian Senate, Bukola Saraki, condemned the army's terming of IPOB as a terrorist organization and its ban by South East governors, describing such categorization as illegal.

But the military has come under severe criticism for the declaration.

"Already the new Police Commissioner of Abia State has, upon resumption of office in Umuahia, cited the declaration of the military as a basis for treating IPOB as a terrorist organisation and its members as terrorists".

But secessionist fervor has risen in recent years, led by IPOB leader Kanu, a British-Nigerian dual national who has proclaimed that Nigeria faces a choice between "Biafra or death".

"This declaration by the Nigerian military is, therefore, a rash, inflammatory, self-serving and risky perspective on the agitations of IPOB".

"IPOB under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wins more converts every day in spite of the attacks, killings, intimidation on the innocent civilians and peaceful members of IPOB, we can not accept the statement credited to Nigeria Army of labelling us a terrorist group, Nigerian Army is the real terrorist group".
