Newcastle United clinch third consecutive win by overcoming Stoke City

Jamaal Lascelles has done an impressive job as leader

The victory took Newcastle into the top half of the Premier League table and they could break into the top four with a third win on the spin at home to Stoke on Saturday.

Jamaal Lascelles was the hero once again for the Magpies by scoring the victor 68 minutes in after goals from Christian Atsu and Xherdan Shaqiri had the game on a knife's edge.

It mattered little though as Ritchie and Lascelles combined to restore Newcastle's lead, the defender credited with the goal as he challenged Wimmer in heading home a corner.

The hosts created the first chance of the match when Shaqiri lost the ball and Ritchie had an attempt from range but his shot was blocked by Ayoze Perez, his own player.

The goal is Atsu's first in the English Premier League after failing to score for loan clubs Everton and Bournemouth.

In the 28th minute Joselu came close to scoring against his former side when he was found unopposed by Chancel Mbemba.

The Spanish striker made a £5m move from Stoke to Newcastle United in the summer, despite being the Potters' most impressive performer in front of goal during pre-season.

However, Shaqiri got his goal after he cut back on his left foot and drove at the defence before shooting from outside the box, and finding the bottom left corner of the goal.

Elliot also managed to beat away Shaqiri's powerfully-struck 51st-minute snapshot. We won, so everything was good, but last week was not easy, ' he explained. Sub Peter Crouch set up Eric Choupo-Moting but his finish lacked composure while, in stoppage time, Bruno Martins Indi's cross was met by Diouf who somehow did not hit the target.
