Mnuchin: Companies working with North Korea are 'on notice'

Wilbur Ross holds a news conference at the Department of Commerce in Washington D.C

In August, China's imports from North Korea were $288.3 million, up 84.4 per cent from July and down 1 per cent from a year ago, based on data on the customs website.

"Kim Jong Un would have to accept considerable risk of failure - or worse, a missile carrying a nuclear warhead could crash into Japan - if he elects to use the Hwasong-12 or -14", Elleman said. The data comes after the United Nations Security Council unanimously voted on August 6 to impose a ban on exports of coal, iron, iron ore, lead, lead ore and seafood as punishment for intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July.

Jong-un said that will consider his response being the "highest level of hard-line countermeasure".

The natural disaster, which South Korea's Meteorological Agency put at magnitude 3.0, was detected 49 km from Kilju in North Hamgyong Province, where North Korea's known Punggye-ri nuclear site is located, the official said.

"The new sanctions set a cap on crude and refined oil exports to North Korea at 8.5 million barrels per year, which represents a 30 percent reduction, according to USA officials". The agency put the tremor at magnitude 3.0. He said in a telephone interview that the North likely would do a couple of trial runs with unarmed missiles in coming months before performing the test with an actual H-bomb aboard. It said the operation showed the seriousness with which it took North Korea's "reckless behavior".

That is about 20km (12m) south-east of where the North conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3, an official from the Korea Meteorological Administration in Seoul said.

An official of South Korea's Meteorological Agency said acoustic waves should be detected in the event of a man-made natural disaster. The tremors from the North were reported a day after the state's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho suggested another nuclear test could be conducted by Pyongyang.

The natural disaster could be the result of a cave in following the test earlier this month.

The quake was centred near North Korea's nuclear test site. At the United Nations, Trump called Kim "rocket man" and threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea.

"If traders were hoping for a strong USA dollar rebound in the wake of this week's Fed meeting, the initial response was certainly encouraging (but) beyond that the response has been underwhelming", said CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson.
