Manchester United v Burton Albion

Manchester United made light work of Burton Albion on Wednesday night, easing their way through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Anthony Martial scored a late penalty, meaning nine of United's 16 goals have now come in the last ten minutes of matches.

José Mourinho had no sooner watched Manchester United swat aside Burton Albion before he suggested he would not be averse to the League Cup being scrapped.

"If the competition is an official competition then it is important for Manchester United and for me as a manager", he told BBC Radio Five Live. He went on to retain the trophy the following year, with Forest going on to become two-time European Cup winners, and there were further back-to-back wins in the competition a decade later as well.

"And when we play at Pride Park, it's exactly the same approach, the same mentality we do with those big games".

De Gea was one of four players manager Jose Mourinho gave two days off after Sunday's Premier League win over Everton, alongside Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic.

The visitors were relieved to go in at the break only 3-0 down given the amount of chances Mourinho's men created.

United's No.19 had already done enough to ensure a trip to Swansea in the next round and, more importantly, stay in Mourinho's good books.

But instead of commending Rashford for his performance, Mourinho was quick to heap praise on his whole side as they booked a spot in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. Majority will never have dreamt that Burton Albion would ever score at Old Trafford.

There was also a first appearance of the season for Luke Shaw, who came on for Juan Mata at half-time and lined up at left wing-back. Matteo Darmian kept the ball in play, chipped it into the box to Anthony Martial, who's acrobatic overhead kick was heading into the goal, only for Flanagan to get a crucial block to keep Burton in the tie.

"I hope they don't beat us by too many". The Burton man charged forward and released Joe Mason, who was only denied by Sergio Romero's fine save. The Frenchman finally got his goal after Rashford freed him up with a delightful through ball. On the eve of this fight, Manchester United defeated Everton - 4: 0.

Mourinho added: "No injuries, no cards, we won and they lost with dignity and had a positive performance, so I think everybody is happy".

Goals from Louis Saha, Kieran Richardson, Ryan Giggs and two from Giuseppe Rossi secured a 5-0 win for the Red Devils in the replay, but Burton boss Nigel Clough still has fond memories of the occasion.
