Kid Rock responds on Facebook to calls to cancel concerts

But some of that joy may be tempered by protesters and counter-protesters outside on the opening night of Little Caesars Arena on Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit where Kid Rock performs the debut concert for the new venue.

The rock superstar is expected to reveal his future plans in front of thousands of fans at the first concert held at the arena. The move signaled that people of color would not be welcome in the arena, the Detroit Free Press columnist opined.

Steve Neavling of Motor City Muckraker reports that some Kid Rock fans have posted threats on social media against the protesters. It's a message that's not too far off those Jim Crow-era signs warning that blacks weren't welcome.

The action came as a response to the column published September 3 by Free Press Editorial Page Editor Stephen Henderson who wrote that Kid Rock is not the proper performer to open the stadium, built with taxpayer funding.

According to Kid's publicist Kirt Webster who was asked about the reason they would not be allowed to cover the show, "You guys wrote a f****ed up story and allowed it to be published".

ESPN's Jemele Hill, co-anchor of the network's flagship show, "SportsCenter", said Rock "loves black people so much that he pandered to racists by using a flag that unquestionably stands for dehumanizing black people". We don't condone bad behavior.

"We have artists who are real Detroiters", who could have been chosen, Allen said.

In 2012, the paper published a column which drew attention to the fact that Rock's "Made in Detroit" clothing line was not actually made in Detroit - or even the United States, for that matter.

"I don't think they are going to understand we don't nee their bs until a bunch are seriously injured".

He added: "I am however very disappointed that none of the people, businesses or charities I have so diligently supported in Detroit have had anything to say about all these unfounded attacks from these handful of jackasses and the Detroit Free Press".
