Jennifer Lopez donates $1 million to Puerto Rico aid efforts

"I urge you to support and donate to the efforts of the first lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rossello".

"This was the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in almost 20 years and the damage is terrible", Lopez told a news conference with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo also announced that he'll be launching a state effort to help Puerto Rico which will encourage NY residents to donate goods as well as raise funds from the business community for organizations in Puerto Rico.

"My cousin and I and our family still haven't been able to hear from all of our family over there, and we are concerned for them and everyone on the island", she said.

Lopez, who is dating baseball legend Alex Rodriguez, said the couple were working with athletes to arrange two aircraft to deliver supplies.

Gov. Cuomo teamed up with some high-profile celebrities Sunday to bring attention to the devastation in Puerto Rico.

"The devastation in Puerto Rico has set us back almost 20 to 30 years", said Puerto Rico Resident Commissioner Jenniffer Gonzalez.

Cuomo was joined by entertainer Jennifer Lopez for the announcement. "Puerto Rico needs help and needs it urgently".

"Puerto Ricans are American citizens, and today Puerto Rican needs our help", the Bronx-born singer and actress, who will co-chair New York's effort, said at Manhattan's Javits Center, where donations will be coordinated.

Engineers on Sunday planned to inspect the roughly 90-year-old Guajataca Dam, which holds back a reservoir covering about 2 square miles in northwest Puerto Rico.

A French warship has brought reconstruction equipment to Caribbean islands slammed by hurricanes Irma and Maria as part of broader efforts to help French territories cope with extreme weather.

More than 15 inches (nearly 40 centimeters) of rain from Maria fell on the surrounding mountains.
