A major quake of magnitude 7.1 struck central Mexico on Tuesday, toppling dozens of buildings in the heavily populated capital and killing at least 49 people nearby.

Susan Hough, a U.S. Geological Survey seismologist, said Tuesday's quake was likely related to one that struck off the coast of the Mexican state of Oaxaca on September 7, which the government calculated as a magnitude 8.2 and the USGS as an 8.1. Officials said more than 60 people had died in the state of Morelos, just south of Mexico City.

Along Reforma Avenue in Mexico City, people fled office buildings as they swayed, the Associated Press reported.

Central Mexico was rocked on Tuesday afternoon by a catastrophic magnitude 7.1 natural disaster. Then airport in Mexico City announced a shutdown shortly after. The natural disaster is the deadliest in Mexico since a 1985 quake happened on the same date. Mexico City's mayor said 30 are dead in the capital alone.

Puebla's Governor reported severely damaged buildings.

Head of Mexico's National Civil Protection Service Luis Felipe Puente said that the number of victims of the massive quake has increased to 139 people.

President Enrique Peña Nieto said that 27 buildings collapsed in the capital, which is around 75 miles from the epicentre, CNN affiliate Foro TV reports.

Part of Mexico City is built on a former lakebed, with the soil known to amplify the effects of earthquakes hundreds of miles away. Across social media, news outlets and citizens shared videos of buildings shaking or collapsing. "We are with you and we will be re for you", wrote president, whose relations with Mexico are very bad.
