Iowa National Guard joins Florida hurricane recovery

Six of the 10 helicopters are equipped with hoists.

The soldiers took off from Davenport Aviation Facility.

The Michigan National Guard is preparing to send more than 1,000 troops to Florida, including aerial units with chinook helicopters that could help carry people and supplies. "I'll learn from them", Thrush said.

The soldiers packed their bags and boarded buses Monday morning to start the journey to southwest Florida to provide civil support and aid to the Florida National Guard.

This past weekend, the Minnesota Air National Guard sent 41 airmen to support the efforts.

The team based out of San Juan, Puerto Rico and conducted missions in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

On Sept. 7, the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing deployed 130 airmen with three HH-60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopters and two HC-130P/N King search and rescue aircraft.

The Guard flew the American citizens in 11 different flights to safety in Puerto Rico. Gov. Scott Walker issued Executive Order 254 September 8, which authorized Wisconsin's adjutant general to call Wisconsin National Guard troops to state active duty to assist Florida through an Emergency Management Assistance Compact request made by Florida Gov. Rick Scott. This is all possible under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, after Florida requested support from Iowa. "In addition to fighting America's wars, we in the Nevada Air National Guard also respond in the homeland and will do everything we can to help".

The 41 Airmen come from the St. Paul based 133rd Airlift Wing, with 14 of the Airmen are trained in emergency medical evacuations where they will support potential missions in the Caribbean or Southern United States.
