Injured Mendy set for long spell out for Man City

The France global suffered the injury during City's 5-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday and is set to travel to Barcelona to have the problem assessed by knee specialist Dr Ramon Cugat.

City boss Guardiola told a news conference ahead of Tuesday's Champions League Group F game against Shakhtar Donetsk that Mendy faced a late fitness test, but he missed out on the matchday squad and might be set for a significant time on the sidelines.

"The day after tomorrow he is travelling to Barcelona. We have alternatives. We have Danilo, (Fabian) Delph and (Oleks) Zinchenko who can play there so we will see as we go along".

"We will wait until Thursday but I am pretty sure it will be longer than we expected".

City expect to know the extent of Mendy's injury in the next 24 hours and could look to buy a replacement in January if he is out for the season. Like what happened a year ago with Ilkay Gundogan, I feel really sad.

"For the way we want to play we will lose a lot, he is a unique player".

This comes following an injury to the French full-back in the game against Crystal Palace at the weekend, with the player having to be substituted. "He is a midfield player, he is so clever".

"I am so, so happy for him". Like with Gundogan a year ago, I feel sorry for him.

Gundogan appeared as a late replacement against Shakhtar, shortly before fellow substitutes Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling combined for the England global to add to Kevin De Bruyne's sublime opener and make it two wins from two in Europe for Guardiola's men.

City have been indomitable in recent weeks but Shakhtar matched their hosts in the first half and might have taken a share of the spoils had they been more clinical.

However, Guardiola was quick to play down any such talk and said: "We will see". We just should try to behave as normal as possible.

"It is hard to come here and demonstrate such courage as our guys have".
