Guardiola baulks at Chelsea or United fearing in-form Manchester City

Yet Man City lead on goal difference after they took their tally to 21 goals with a 5-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

But while City are scoring for fun, Palace can't buy a goal - Saturday's thrashing set a new English league record of six successive games without a win or goal at the start of a season.

"I know Shakhtar very well from my period in Barcelona and Bayern Munich, we played a lot of times", he said.

"It's ridiculous to sit and talk about positives when you have been beaten 5-0", admitted Palace boss Roy Hodgson, whose side face United and Chelsea in their next two games. The Manchester clubs kept control of the title race, Alvaro Morata scored his first Chelsea hat-trick and Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho began to redeem himself for angling to join Barcelona.

Leaders City were already well on the way to victory when Aguero struck their fourth in the 79th minute after an opener from Leroy Sane and quickfire double from Raheem Sterling.

"We were not able to fight until the end in either the Premier League or the Champions League".

"There were five, ten seconds before someone goes to take the ball and start to play. And we didn't for most of the time in the first half".

More significantly, it allowed Guardiola's side to edge clear of Jose Mourinho's Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table on goal difference. Any win at Southampton is a good one, even if it is by a 1-0 scoreline.

Sane made only his second Premier League start of the campaign after Guardiola revealed poor form in pre-season left the Germany winger lagging behind his team-mates and City's other offensive talents are aware they can not afford similar slips. Let us know in the comments section below!

Palace, on the other hand, have lost their first six games of the season and are the only team in the top four divisions to not score a goal.

Palace were beaten 1-0 by Southampton at Selhurst Park in Hodgson's first match in charge, as they became the first club in top-flight history to lose their opening five games without scoring.

"Before I arrived here, people said it would be easy but it's hard".

"I believe we've got a better squad than we had last season with strength in depth".

Sterling has scored in each of his last five league games, giving Guardiola yet another attacking option.
