McMaster made the declaration Wednesday after the National Hurricane Center's forecast on Irma's track shifted east, putting the prospect of a major hurricane just off the coast of Florida about 200 miles (320 kilometers) away from Charleston by Monday morning. OPCON Four is the next highest response level above normal, day-to-day activities, and emergency managers make initial preparations for the possibility of any hazardous situations.

"The state of emergency allows one of the best, most experienced emergency response teams in the entire world to begin organizing response efforts", McMaster said, while urging people to prepare for a possible landfall.

Hodge says emergency management leaders will meet Wednesday afternoon to ensure a plan is in place to "facilitate the needs of our first responders and citizens of Georgetown". Agencies and departments will determine personnel availability and assignments.

Georgetown County announced on its Facebook page that emergency officials are "monitoring a potential threat to (the) county".

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Irma.

People in potentially vulnerable areas should review personal safety plans, become familiar with local evacuation zones in coastal counties and locate the nearest hurricane evacuation routes.

Irma could make landfall in SC as a category 3 or 4 hurricane, according to a Wednesday update by forecasters at the National Weather Service in Columbia.

Dorchester County will continue to provide daily readiness updates and will provide guidance in the event that action is required.
