She had spent the night securing a Hardee County shelter and had left to get supplies when the crash occurred, Lanier said.

Vehicles driven by a sheriff's deputy and a correctional officer crashed into each other Sunday morning, killing both in Hardee County, southeast of Tampa.

WFLA.com said the person in the other auto was also killed. There were no other passengers in either vehicle.

Sgt. Joseph Ossman, 53, who worked at the Hardee County Correctional Institute, was on his way to work around 6:35 a.m. when he approached Crewsville Road while driving westbound on State Road 66, troopers said. Bridges was behind the wheel of her cruiser in the crash.

There is a prison in Hardee County but it was not one of the facilities listed as under evacuation by the Florida Department of Corrections.

The crash is being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol. She is survived by her husband and young son, according to her Facebook page.

"We are heartbroken by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and fellow officers at this time", Jones said in a statement.

The truck was carrying a generator, ABC News reported.
