CC Sabathia Rips Nunez, Red Sox Over Bunting

CC Sabathia helps Yankees take opener vs. Red Sox, 6-2

The Boston Red Sox made a decision to come out bunting against CC Sabathia on Thursday night, and saying the New York Yankees pitcher did not agree with the strategy would be an understatement.

He remained in the game and should be fine. The previous start against Boston was on August 19 in Sabathia's return from the disabled list following a knee injury. They tied it 1-all on Sanchez's 28th homer in the third and went ahead when Nunez, the second baseman, misplayed Sanchez's popup into an RBI single in the fifth.

Already leading 2-1 in the sixth inning, New York's Chase Headley doubled to lead off the inning.

"It's just kind of weak to me", Sabathia said after the game. He also got hit by a pitch from Dellin Betances during the ninth inning of Boston's 6-2 loss. Didi Gregorius added an RBI single, and Bird had a run-scoring single in the seventh. It pulled the Yankees back within 4.5 games of first place in the AL East.

"I don't give a f-k about their reaction", Sabathia said, referring to his in-game outburst.

PHOENIX - Zack Greinke earned his major league-best 16th victory with six strong innings and Arizona beat Los Angeles to complete the first series sweep of the Dodgers this season.

NOTES: Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he expects the suspensions for Cs Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine to be staggered once their appeals are heard, which could be Friday.

There were opportunities on both sides, but no opportunity loomed larger than the Red Sox' chance to push their division lead to 61⁄2 games, which would have been their largest of the season. Review sent Davis back to the plate to strike out to end the top of the second inning.

In defeat, Andrew Benintendi has obtained two hits in addition to pick three goals on balls. He was called out on review.

The runners never scored as Sabathia fanned Xander Bogaerts on a 2-2 slider and left-handed hitting rookie third baseman Rafael Devers on a full count slider. He reached safely on a throwing error by Sabathia, who has been pitching with a balky knee the past few years.

In the seventh inning, Bird was doubled off second base after a Brett Gardner lineout.

BALTIMORE - Baltimore's seven-game winning streak ended under a barrage of home runs by Kendrys Morales, who went deep three times and had a career-high seven RBIs to help Toronto prevail.
