Border wall prototype construction could start this week

The first step in building President Trump's border wall will soon be underway. "Moving forward with the prototypes enables us to continue to incorporate all the tools necessary to secure our border".

Construction began on eight wall prototypes for the wall.

The contractors are erecting eight prototypes in San Diego - four made of concrete and four of other materials.

On Monday border patrol agents in San Diego were seen patrolling the build site.

Construction was expected to last less than a month, CBP officials said.

"We are committed to securing our border and that includes constructing border walls", CBP's acting deputy commissioner, Ronald Vitiello, said in a statement Tuesday. "We don't want any violence, we don't want the wall at all, but especially not now", said Enrique Morones from Border Angels.

Each structure will be between 18 and 30 feet tall and created to deter illegal crossings, according to the federal agency.

There was no indication of demonstrations against the construction projects Tuesday, but law enforcement officers were prepared for any demonstrations.

The prototypes will be built in the San Diego Sector in southern California.

On the campaign trail and early in his administration, Trump had said repeatedly that Mexico would pay for the wall's construction - a proposition that has also been repeatedly rejected by Mexican leaders.

President Donald Trump's campaign promise to build a "big handsome wall" is in progress, with several companies ready to start construction on about half a dozen prototypes this week. Prior to restricting any area to the public, though, the county will issue a public notice at least 24 hours in advance.
