BMW i Vision Dynamics to rival Tesla — FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW

Frankfurt Motor Show: BMW i Vision Dynamics promises greater range than Tesla Model S

It has a range of 373 miles (600 km) and a top speed of more than 120 mph (200 kph), BMW said in a statement.

While those are pretty tempting performance figures details of the i Vision Dynamics' underpinnings are notable by their absence.

Although the BMW i Vision Dynamics is, in a sense, the beginning, it is by no means a solitaire.

"The BMW i Vision Dynamics is combining electric mobility with the core values of BMW: dynamism and elegance", commented Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. It's the service. So times are changing and we have to look at what is the quality of a BMW. In profile it reveals typical BMW proportions with a mildly truncated rear end, a long wheelbase and wheels pushed out to the corners.

This is combined with freestanding LED lights to give the BMW an imposing look.

A model like this would fit into BMW's "I" all-electric line-up between the i3 hatchback and the i8 sports vehicle. It sports a large kidney grille at the front, 22-inch wheels and hockey stick-shaped headlights.

BMW says the i5 will be in showrooms from 2021, but whether it will resemble the design shown in Frankfurt remains to be seen. All in all, BMW intends to deliver 25 models with an electrified drive system by 2025, with 12 of them being of the pure electric variety.

This announcement will be welcomed by fans of old-fashioned internal combustion power, because unlike Volvo, which has committed to an entire range of hybrid or electric vehicles by 2020, BMW seems to believe there's still a future for conventional drivetrains.
