BlackBerry Priv will not get Android Nougat upgrade

BlackBerry Priv won't receive update to Android Nougat

"We do not have any plans today to bring [the BlackBerry Priv] to Nougat", says Alex Thurber, the general manager of BlackBerry Mobility Solutions, during a recent podcast with BlackBerry fan site UTB Blogs. While the Priv did get updated from Lollipop (5.0) to Marshmallow (6.0) a year ago, BlackBerry's experience back then proved to them how hard a task that would be. He was asked numerous questions about current and upcoming BlackBerry devices, and the biggest revelation came in the way of an update on the status of the Priv smartphone. While it is not confirmed whether DTEK devices i.e. the DTEK 60 and DTEK 50 will get an Android version update. This of course has not bee confirmed so it could possibly change. The smartphone was launched with Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box. However, he noted that was a massive undertaking which required getting the device partners on board and that it will be next to impossible to repeat for updates to Android 7.0 Nougat and beyond.

The BlackBerry Priv is by no means an old phone. As for the recently launched BlackBerry KEYone, Thurber added that it will be receiving Android 8.0 Oreo.

Continuing the release of Android 7.0 update for Galaxy smartphones, Samsung India has now rolled out Nougat update for Galaxy A7 2017-variant. It had a slide out physical keyboard and a touch display unlike the KEYone which has the keyboard and screen fused together. It has a 2-megapixel front camera. Powering the handset is a 1.8GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor coupled with 3GB RAM. You also get up to 2TB expandable storage using microSD card.

This unannounced device is expected to arrive as the so-called BlackBerry Krypton.
