Benjamin Mendy's season in doubt after confirmation of ACL injury

Fabian Delph celebrates with his Man City team-mates at Chelsea

Having joined the Citizens from Ligue 1 champions Monaco in the summer, Mendy has made a huge impression in England both on and off the pitch.

Tests have now confirmed he has ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee.

However, the 23-year-old Frenchman suffered a nasty-looking knee injury during City's 5-0 win over Crystal Palace on the weekend and fans feared the worst as Mendy was immediately subbed off and soon seen trudging around in crutches.

On Wednesday, the coach of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola had described the absence of his player of "major setback" for his team, not excluding the recruitment of another side left in the mercato of winter.

"After initial tests in Manchester at the start of the week, Benjamin travelled to Barcelona to see a specialist doctor, where further examinations of the knee today confirmed the extent of the injury".

The diagnosis, though, was not a good one for Mendy who will now undergo surgery in Barcelona on Friday, with the France defender facing several months on the sidelines.

Given that Mendy is a big fan of the game, which will no doubt occupy his days as he lets his knee rest, the new rating of 76 is likely to disappoint the French worldwide.

That will be the question asked when the January transfer window opens.

"In the way he plays, the amount of times he goes up and down the sides, there is no replacement, we have to play in a different way", said the City boss.

Guardiola may be forced into deploying midfielders Fabian Delph or Fernandinho there, though that would hardly be ideal.
