It is thus quite naturally that we learn today via Disney Pictures, the studio has made a decision to shift the date of The Episode IX of the may 22, 2019 to 20 December of the same year (and so for us probably 18).

Abrams has considerable pedigree in sci-fi, having successfully rebooted the Star Trek franchise, directing two of the new films, as well as producing the Cloverfield trilogy and the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. "The Force Awakens" earned over $2 billion at worldwide box office and became the third-highest grossing film of all time.

The development comes after Abrams stepped in to replace Colin Trevorrow as the helmer of the ninth chapter of the Star Wars film franchise. Still, despite airing throughout the day, the new episode will notably also air on Monday nights, which is when most people will likely watch, considering people will presumably be at school or at work during the day.

Lucasfilm announced a week ago that Trevorrow had left as director of Episode IX, attributing his exit to differing visions between the filmmaker and studio executives. Due to the tragic death of Carrie Fisher, the Star Wars: Episode IX script is continuing to receive major re-writes.

There was also the matter of Trevorrow's relationship with Kathleen Kennedy.

Firstly, Phil Lord and Chris Miller were bumped off the Han Solo spin-off movie, which came as an unpleasant surprise to pretty much everyone, only for Ron Howard of all people to step into the director's chair.

Predictably, the star power from the galaxy's greatest Jedi awakened a Force to be reckoned with on social media.

In another interview Johnson also revealed that the film is nearly ready, so it's a good time for Star Wars fans to get excited.

So when it was announced that JJ was helming Star Wars IX, it offered some stability to the bumpy few months the franchise has experienced. Abrams is, however, not new to directing sequels. Abrams will at least give the latest Star Wars trilogy a satisfying conclusion.
