All 30 Major League Baseball teams to open 2018 season

The Cincinnati Reds will open the 2018 season against the Washington Nationals on March 29, the organization announced Tuesday. But schedule-announcement day was interesting this time, because baseball is in for one big change next season that ought to have fans talking.

That means that in a season with an overseas opener, there could be three different Opening Days: official Opening Day, domestic Opening Day and the day after domestic Opening Day, when most teams play their first game. Knowing how Major League Baseball operates, however, it'll probably still start in the afternoon and go up against all of the other live games.

Don't book your spring break travel too late on the 2018 calendar - unless you're all right missing Opening Day.

The earlier start date is part of the 2017-2021 Basic Agreement between MLB and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA). This season the first game was on April 2 and most teams started on April 3. It will be the first regular-season play in Puerto Rico since the New York Mets took on the then-Florida Marlins in 2010.

This does not affect the beginning of the full-season Minor League Baseball season, set for a week later on April 5.

As mentioned, Opening Day will be on Thursday, March 29th, with all 30 MLB teams playing (yay!) instead of what we've seen in recent years with three nationally televised games taking place on Sunday and the rest of the league starting play on Monday.

Opening Day features eight divisional matchups among the 15 games, in addition to an interleague contest between the Detroit Tigers and host Pittsburgh Pirates.

The final day of the 2018 regular season features 12 divisional games on September 30, including the Yankees visiting the rival Boston Red Sox. The earliest opening date for a season at traditional Major League ballparks was previously March 30, when the 2003, 2008 and 2014 seasons began.
