Afghanistan: At least 2 killed in explosion near cricket stadium in Kabul

At least three people were killed and several injured after a suicide bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint near a cricket stadium in Kabul on Wednesday.

The blast reportedly took place while a game was being played, near one of the gates of the stadium, Ministry of Interior spokesman Najib Danish told CNN.

All players and spectators were reported safe.

The blast outside Kabul International Cricket Stadium took place during a match in Afghanistan's Shpageeza Cricket League, a T20 franchise tournament on the lines of the Indian Premier League and similar 20-over tournaments.

According to Tolo News, it is a case of suicide bombing and two security men have lost their lives.

The explosion happened at about 3.45pm on Wednesday afternoon.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, the latest in a series of deadly assaults in the city.

The match was stopped immediately.

The Shpageeza Cricket League season kicked off on Monday and is scheduled to run through to September 22 at the Kabul International Cricket Stadium.
