A 12-year-old girl in Tamil Nadu studying in class 7 committed suicide after she was allegedly shamed by her teacher in the class room for staining her uniform with menstrual blood.

The parents had no idea why she took the drastic step until they found her letter in which she had said that her friends had pointed out that her bench and uniform had menstrual blood on them and when she asked her teacher if she could excuse herself to go to the restroom, her teacher yelled. Also the FIR did not mention the name of the teacher as the suicide note did not name her.

"After she experienced menstruation in the classroom, the teacher sent her out with a stern rebuke".

India recently invited global attention after a couple of firms introduced leave for their female employees on the first day of their menstrual period. "As the victim claimed her teacher was torturing her, we have altered the case from suicide to abetment of suicide".

In the suicide note, she said: "Did I ever get reported when I was in Class VI?"

The 26-year-old teacher has been charged with abetment to suicide (IPC section 306). As thenewsminute.com reported, not only did she not help but gave her a cloth to be wiped out.

"The teacher did not even take into account that there were boys in the class".

Her parents, devastated by the death of their daughter, along with other people protested in front of the school.

Menstruation is still considered taboo in parts of Southeast Asia, including India.

Palayamkottai police said the suicide was the result of the overzealous scolding of the young girl due to poor academic performance.
