Wenger thankful Giroud turned down chance to leave

Olivier Giroud Arsenal Leicester City Premier League

In the league's first Friday night start, Arsene Wenger's side was trailing 3-2 with seven minutes remaining but Ramsey grabbed the equaliser and Giroud headed in an 85th-minute victor.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud staked a claim for a starting place with the victor in a thrilling season-opening 4-3 victory over Leicester City in the Premier League on Friday.

The match was a great advert for a league that is already prime box office viewing worldwide but Arsenal's hopes of a first title since 2004 will require some polishing of a rusty defence after Leicester put away half of their chances.

It didn't take long for things to get started, with Alexandre Lacazette giving Arsenal the lead in just the second minute of his debut as the most expensive signing in the history of the club.

Two minutes later, the comeback was complete, with super-sub Giroud sending the home fans wild via magnificent header from a Xhaka corner, despite being held by Wes Morgan. It's interesting. Let's say the referee tends to let play continue. and you only really understand that when you experience it.

"Not only as a player, he is a fantastic player, b ut as well in the group - he has a big weight in the squad and it was a relief for me that he chose to stay".

Giroud had been linked with an exit during the summer, and Wenger admitted he considered allowing his most authentic target man to leave but the 30-year-old resisted the idea.

Manager Arsene Wenger this week revealed that he gave the player the option of leaving, but that he chose to fight for his place. "If you look at that from a neutral point, for a first game it was a top quality game".

"We started very well but then we made two mistakes and they turned it around", said Cech. That's how it came about but I think it was perhaps too early to celebrate because we didn't know how the match was going to pan out.

"I'm always looking for the positives, we came to the Emirates and the players executed the game plan".

"I'm happy the goals we conceded we can work on together".
