Trump praises North Korea's Kim for 'wise' decision on Guam

Trump's tough talk forced North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un to publicly abandon plans to bomb Guam when it became clear that the United States would treat an attack against the largely forgotten USA territory the same as an attack against the 50 states.

Japan also plans to shell out for equipment to counter the growing threat posed by North Korea. The back and forth culminated in North Korea threatening earlier this month to strike Guam in the coming weeks.

As our nation's leaders strategize and pursue diplomatic options for the Korean peninsula, I am confident that the United States is prepared militarily should North Korea continue to act irrationally. Nauert avoided giving a detailed answer on whether an immediate cessation of provocative threats and nuclear or missile testing counted as possible signs North Korea could give, as Tillerson and Secretary of Defense James Mattis argued in an August 13 joint contribution to the Wall Street Journal.

Dunford says: "As long as the threat in North Korea exists we need to maintain a high state of readiness to respond to that threat".

The threat came just hours after US President Donald Trump warned Pyongyang of "fire and fury" if its threats continued. To be clear, the North Korean madman is not suggesting he will actually hit Guam, nor has he said the weapon will be armed with any warhead, be it nuclear or conventional.

"What matters is that if a second conflict (on the peninsula) erupts, that can not help but lead to a nuclear war", the North's official Korean Central News Agency said in a commentary. That Cold War event took almost a year to get our naval Captain and crew safely returned to the United States.

The world will need to get used to North Korea having nuclear weapons for now, according to a former top United States intelligence advisor currently visiting Australia.

Before launching a full-scale attack against North Korea or a surgical strike against key targets, the United States would first have to consider evacuating American citizens and alerting its allies for fear of North Korean counterattacks, USA officials and experts said. Thousands of United States soldiers are stationed in South Korea and Japan.

North Korea's announcement provoked strong condemnation from not only the USA but also Japan, over whose mainland the missiles would have to fly to reach Guam.
