The ARX-05 Is Acura's Kickass Return To Racing Prototypes

FIA WEC

Acura refers to their latest, Dave Marek designed experimental prototype as "the new look of speed", and that it is; although Acura Motorsports has not, and will most likely never share the full specifications of a vehicle custom built for Team Penske Racing. The ARX-05 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6, which is based on the production 3.5-liter V-6 that powers Acura's production models.

Based on the successful ORECA 07 platform (which was also used by Jackie Chan DC Racing at 24 Hours of Le Mans), the ARX-05's chassis is made from lightweight carbon fiber. In the case of the ARX-05, the bodywork was developed by the Acura Global Creative team. The competition debut of the Team Penske Acura prototypes will take place at the season-opening Rolex 24 in January, 2018. The same engine fitted to the TLX GT campaigned at the Pirelli World Challenge Series, it should produce around 600 hp, which is the DPi regulations' target power figure. The multi-year DPi program will be administered by Honda Performance Development (HPD), the racing arm for both Acura Motorsports and Honda Racing in North America.

The team also confirmed today that they will enter the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta in October. The second driver pairing will be announced at a later date.

The new RLX incorporates design cues to showcase its performance capabilities, including Acura's signature diamond pentagon grille, a more sculpted hood, new wheel designs, bold, newly designed LED taillights, dual exhaust finishers and a gloss black rear diffuser.

Acura has kicked off the Monterey Car Week with the debut of its redesigned Acura RLX sedan. Last year, Acura launched its next-generation, electrified NSX supercar as a new and pinnacle expression of Acura Precision Crafted Performance. As far as race cars go, this is one sexy beast.

We only have a few static images and the reveal video, above, at the moment- but we'll all get to see the Acura ARX-05 in action soon enough, at the 24 Hours of Daytona this winter. Additionally, Team Penske's IndyCar driver Helio Castroneves has also been linked to the Acura and Penske's lineup.
