State checks in at 20th in Preseason AP Top 25

LSU at Auburn

It's the eighth time in the past 16 years that Boise State has not opened the season in the Top 25, but the Broncos have made it into the AP top 25 rankings at some point during the season in each of the past 15 years.

The rest of the top five is basically what everyone and their brother was expecting.

Truly, the only surprises for me were Oklahoma State being ranked lower than Oklahoma, Michigan not being top 10, Texas being ranked and also Tennessee cracking the top 25.

Preseason rankings are rare in Manhattan. They also weren't ranked in the Coaches Poll released earlier this month.

Kansas State will enter the football season as a ranked team for the first time since 2014. The preseason poll was started in 1950.

No. 12 Auburn will open the season against Georgia Southern on September 2 at 6:30 p.m. central time at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Ohio State is No. 2 and is a favorite to win the Big Ten, Florida State is No. 3 with the second-most first-place votes and USC is fourth.

Meanwhile, Ohio State - which is ranked second - is making its 29th consecutive appearance in the preseason poll.

Alabama is the only Southeastern Conference team in the top 10, but the SEC still leads the way with six teams in the Top 25. Georgia, 6. Louisville, 17. The reigning national champion Tigers are still in the top five despite losing key players, such as Deshaun Watson. Florida, 18. Miami, 19.

- 15.4 teams (61.6 percent total) started the season ranked and finished the season ranked.
