Sonic Mania has been delayed to August 29th

Sonic Mania's opening animation is G-rated, but it's aimed at the hearts of those of you old enough to be nostalgic

The PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch versions of Sonic Mania are still on track for release on August 15. Sega chose to delay this release in order to better optimize the game.

Sonic Mania celebrates the best of Classic Sonic, pushing the envelope forward with stunning 60 FPS gameplay and pixel-perfect physics, and will feature a split-screen multiplayer competitive mode.

Those who pre-ordered the collector's edition of Sonic Mania will still get their big attractive box on August 15. The previously announced Collector's Edition of Sonic Mania can be pre-ordered here for a limited time.

In other Sonic Mania news, Sega has unveiled the opening animation to the game, which beautifully captures the zany, impressionistic pizazz of the early 90s. We got to see a small portion of this a few months back, so it's nice to see the full thing.

Sonic Mania will be comprised of mostly returning classic stages with a twist, but also will have its own new zones including Studiopolis Zone which had new footage of its first act shown briefly at the end of the live stream.

A third person game using pre-rendered sprites (akin to Donkey Kong Country) on polygonal backdrops, Xtreme promised a very unique take on 3D Sonic that wouldn't be tested again until 2013's Sonic Lost World.
