Shopian encounter: Two soldiers killed, one terrorist neutralized

Encounter occurred in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian

In a major setback for Hizbul Mujahideen, its operations commander Yaseen Itoo was killed in an encounter with security forces in J&K's Shopian, PTI reported.

In another encounter in Kashmir's Bandipora, two policemen were left injured when militants opened fire at them.

A youth Identified as Mohammad Sayed Bhat was critically injured in Shopian clashes and was shifted to SMHS hospital Srinagar for treatment. He was one of the longest surviving militants in Kashmir.

Police said the firing stopped late in the night but resumed early Sunday, when three rebels were killed. The Pulwama-Shopian-Kulgam region has become a hotbed of homegrown terrorists, the officials said.

Two soldiers who laid down their lives are Sepoy Gawai Sumedh Waman and Sepoy Ilayaraja P, both 25. The slain militants were identified as Umar Majid Sheikh, Irfan ul Sheikh and Ghaznavi.
In the encounter, two Army personnel however made the supreme sacrifice.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir's mostly Muslim population and most people support the rebels' cause against Indian rule.almost 70,000 people have been killed in the uprising and the ensuing Indian military crackdown. "He has been admitted in Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital where his condition is stable", said a police spokesman. The operation was executed by Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, and the CRPF.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the three youth were martyred by the troops during a siege and search operation in Awneera area of the district. Two soldiers later succumbed to injuries, and during the encounter, four houses were also damaged.

Mir was wounded after during a petrol bomb explosion, which was hurdled by unknown persons, towards the police party at Dalgate in Srinagar on Saturday evening.
