Rogers Cup: Roger Federer beats Robin Haase in Montreal semi-finals

Federer comes through Ferrer test to reach the last eight at the Rogers Cup

Ferrer lost his nerve when serving out at 5-3, but Federer failed to make the most of the reprieve and handed the break straight back to surrender the first set.

Canadian teenager Shapovalov captured the imagination of an entire country, after upstaging top seed and 15-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal as well as Juan Martin del Potro en route to the semi-finals in Montreal.

"If I would have known I would have gone to the finals, I would have said "yes" right away".

Shapovalov won seven of the final eight points of the third set tiebreaker before closing out the match with a forehand victor down the line. "The crowd really lifted me".

"I'm happy, most happy that I'm actually really healthy going into the finals", said Federer. "I also told him that this is just the first match of very, very many that we will play against him".

Robin Haase of the Netherlands celebrates his victory over Diego Schwartzman of Argentina during quarter-final play at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament Friday August 11, 2017 in Montreal.

Federer served two double faults in his opening service game but still managed to save three break points to fend off his bullish opponent. I wished he won as well because it would have done much more for his career than for me.

In the other quarter-finals, Shapovalov came from a set down to beat Adrian Mannarino of France 2-6 6-3 6-4, and Germany's Alexander Zverev dismissed South Africa's Kevin Anderson in straight sets, 7-5 6-4.

"Yesterday, I struggled against [David] Ferrer early on, so today was better", he said, per ATPWorldTour.

Fourth-seeded Zverev, coming off a win last week in Washington, D.C., and seeking a fifth tournament win this year, will face Swiss legend Roger Federer in the final on Sunday.

"I hope it gives me a lot of confidence", Haase said of his performance for the week. All the while Shapovalov won the adoration of the local fans and dealt with the newfound fame and pressure that goes with it quite admirably.

Bautista Agut fought back from a set down and out-lasted Frenchman Gael Monfils 4-6 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/2) in just under three hours.

The 36-year-old Federer has his longest winning streak since 2012.

The 18-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., had his sights set on a place in the top 100 in the ATP rankings this year, but a successful run at the Rogers Cup has guaranteed him a place in the mid-60s - and he's not finished.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer continued his pursuit of a third Rogers Cup title, but his first in Montreal.
