P!nk's daughter called herself 'ugly', and the singer wasn't having it

Jack Antonoff arrives at the MTV Video Music Awards at The Forum on Sunday Aug. 27 2017 in Inglewood Calif

"We help other people to change so that they can see more kinds of beauty".

Speaking at the MTV VMAs, where Pink picked up the Video Vanguard award, he added to Entertainment Tonight: "I've watched [Pink], the craziness from the last 16 years".

After taking to the stage to receive the acclaimed accolade, the artist made a decision to shape her acceptance speech around a conversation she shared with her daughter recently.

While accepting her award, Pink recounted a time when her daughter told her she was "the ugliest girl" she knew.

'My brain went to, "Oh my God, you're six". Where is this coming from?

Her bond with daughter Willow is clearly everything to her - and we couldn't love her more for it. 'Instead I went home and I made a Powerpoint presentation for her.

The Try singer continued, saying she showed her daughter the likes of Sir Elton John, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Annie Lennox, George Michael and Michael Jackson as artists who were true to themselves. I said, "Well, what do you think I look like?' She said, 'You're beautiful".

"I think it's bad", one mom said. Her politically-charged new single, "What About Us", released earlier this month, is the first offering from her upcoming album, Beautiful Trauma. And I was like, "Well, thanks". And thanks to icons like Pink who live their truth by expressing their unique selves, we're encouraged to embrace what makes us us and help others expand their definition of beauty. "They say I look like a boy or I'm too masculine or I have too many opinions, my body is too strong"'.

She said: "I honestly can't believe how responsible I am". "Yes, mama." P!nk said as applause rang out through the crowd.

The best line of the night (hell, the best line of the decade, as far as we're concerned): "Baby girl, we don't change", Pink said. "No, Mama." "Do you see me changing the way I present myself to the world?" It's a juggle. You know, I have a family.

'"OK! So, baby girl". Because it's time to hook everybody up with some matching pin-striped threads for the holiday greeting cards, we're telling you. There's so much rad shit happening right now in music. And keep doing it. Keep shining for the rest of us to see'.

Pink closed out her empowering and moving speech with a message directly for Willow, who could be seen listening in the crowd: "And you, my darling girl, are handsome".

Well we're inspired - this speech isn't just an important lesson in motherhood but a powerful statement on non-conformity.
