Nemanja Matic "very happy" after opening-game win against West Ham United

United boss Jose Mourinho praises effective Romelu Lukaku after West Ham brace

Club-record signing Romelu Lukaku netted either side of the break before Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba added gloss to the score line at the death.

This was a scintillating attacking performance, and talk will naturally surround Romelu Lukaku's performance, but everything started with the former Chelsea man, who patrolled West Ham and turned them into his plaything.

Jose Mourinho: "Many times last season, we deserved to win and we didn't".

While Rashford and Lukaku were hugging, Matic and Mata - both formerly of Chelsea - hugged and high-fived as the Spaniard applauded his new teammate on his superb awareness and defensive display. That's why we won 4-0 against a very good team in the first game.

"I always thought he'd be a ideal player for us".

"He's a player of, I think, now 29 last week - 29 years old, with five years or so in the Premier League, lots of experience. Hopefully we can continue to play like we did today, but we will see - the season is long". I think we all owe a big thank you to Antonio Conte for his generosity.

"Then this season, when I got the call that Matic wants to play for me and for Manchester United, and he can make it happen, I thought he's the flawless player for me".

"It was a really important game for us to start well with the three points", the Serbian told Sky Sports.

Matic enjoyed an excellent first half performance on his Old Trafford debut, breaking up play and dominating the midfield, immediately winning the favour of the home crowd. We knew they had a strong side of course, but I expected us to do much better.
