Man United, Tottenham make winning starts in Premier League

The Portuguese, who has won a league title in the second season of every job he has had, says he is excited for United's opening Premier League fixture, at home to West Ham, live on Sky Sports Premier League, and is desperate to be competitive in every competition this term.

Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba also struck late on as United outshone all their rivals over the weekend to top the fledgling table, leading manager Jose Mourinho to salute their new-found confidence.

Also, United need to avoid slumping out of form in the later stages of the Premier League, something that happened last season, finishing in sixth place.

Meanwhile, West Ham manager Slaven Bilic seemed to be a dead man walking at the London Stadium, seen as the fall guy for his side's occasional abysmal performances at their new taxpayer-funded ground in the capital.

Mourinho, though, insists he is not getting carried away.

"We didn't start especially well, we were a little bit nervous for 10, 15 minutes".

"I just think that he was very clear by showing that what he did previous year was not enough for him".

After sacrificing the Premier League to focus on the Europa League with a couple of months of 2016-17 left to play, Mourinho was fully aware that anything other than victory over Ajax in the Stockholm final would have been seen as a disaster. Because many times last season we deserved to win and we didn't. "They tried to get the third and fourth, which is always good news and something we're not used to".

Red Devils have significantly improved their squad with the signings of striker Romelu Lukaku, midfielder Nemanja Matic and centre-back Victor Lindelof.

A family of Reds who had travelled all the way from Washington DC added: "It was our first match coming over from the USA and it was incredible".

"And since I left I always thought he could be a flawless player for us". It was hard for him to come and adapt to the beginning, and I think Victor needs a little bit of time and he's going to have that time. We have him and we are very happy.

"But we have players and if we cannot strengthen the team in these areas we have people we can trust and go for it". Today we did and it's three important points.

Ibrahimovic has been sidelined since April after sustaining an ACL injury against Celta Vigo for Manchester United, which is effectively the only reason why he was released by the club after a terrific season in which he scored 28 goals.
