Lockdown in Nimes following reported incident at railway station

French police evacuated a train station in the southern town of Nimes on Saturday after passengers reported seeing armed individuals.

While law enforcement agencies at present say the reports were unfounded, one person has been detained for "other reasons" following "suspicious activity".

The men boarded the train at Nimes, just east of Spain.

The local authorities nevertheless urged people not to go near the station for the time being.

However, law enforcement agencies - which were called to the scene after an emergency call - declined such reports.

Train services were briefly cancelled, and passengers told to reschedule their journeys, but by 11pm the "situation was practically back to normal", said the Gard Prefecture official.

Midi Libre added, that according to its sources, the man's weapon was possibly fake.

Police quickly found and arrested him, said the spokesman, who was not authorised to be publicly named.

French authorities stepped up controls on the border with Spain after the Barcelona attacks.
