J&K: Encounter underway in Shopian; 2-3 terrorists holed up

A gun battle broke out between the security forces and the terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian area on Saturday evening.

A militant was killed on Sunday following a fresh gunfight at Zainpora area of south Kashmir's Shopian district. Two soldiers later succumbed to injuries, they said.

Meanwhile, different reports suggest presence of 10 to 13 militants even though the number could not be officially confirmed.

After receiving intelligence inputs that a group of two to three militants were hiding in the village, security forces including Rashtriya Rifles, state police and the CRPF surrounded the area on Saturday.

He said as the security forces were conducting searches, the militants opened firing on them which was retaliated by the law enforcement personnel, triggering a gunfight.

Police said three militants are believed to be holed up inside the village.

Seven civilians are reported to have sustained pellet injuries during the clashes and have been shifted to hospital for treatment.

Police also denied rumours that a mosque was damaged during the gunfight between the security forces and the militants.
