How I Met Your Mother Spin-off Starting From Scratch With New Writers

How I Met Your Mother Spinoff CBS

"They will be starting from scratch", Walden said. The network is eyeing a new group of writers this time around. Speaking to Deadline, Fox chairman Dana Walden confirmed that the latest attempt wouldn't be using any previously developed material and the as yet unnamed writers will be starting from scratch.

Originally, the "How I Met Your Mother" spin-off was hatched by CBS during the final season of the first series.

Depending how you felt about the series finale of How I Met Your Mother, you may have been super pumped or totally turned off by the prospect of a How I Met Your Dad spinoff. Walden adds that this idea has been "slowly cooked", so it seems like Fox isn't really in a big rush to make it happen.

Greta Gerwig had been slated to take the lead as a character described as a "female Peter Pan" sort of character, while Meg Ryan had been tapped to narrate the series, just as comedian and Full House star Bob Saget had done on How I Met Your Mother.

In fact, this is not the first time a spin-off has been attempted: a show called How I Met Your Dad was pitched to execs and even had a script for the pilot episode, but the creators moved on to another show and the project was shelved. Since this one has a built-in audience of sorts, the idea is already appealing, but if the show can't turn into something unique that's worth putting on TV, then we might never see it come to fruition.

The studio will try (developing a spinoff) with different writers. We don't want to force it on the show because if it doesn't feel organic it will feel like it will be just a distraction from the flagship.

This will be the third attempt at spinning off the long-running CBS comedy, which ended in 2014. The show centered on five friends - Ted (Josh Radnor), Marshall (Jason Segel), Robin (Cobie Smulders), Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) - and was told from Ted's point of view.
