Hideki Matsuyama is in position for his first major

Kevin Kisner opens with birdie to grab lead alone at PGA

Ernie Els, in contrast, will probably have one round remaining in his PGA Championship career after falling to a deflating opening nine-over 80 and 138th position.

Kisner, who already has two PGA Tour victories to his name, carded a round of 67 for the second day running to finish eight-under going into round three.

While the majority of the morning starters struggled with Quail Hollow's thick Bermuda rough, Kisner had no such trouble and was hot with the putter.

"I was out of it, but I gathered a little something off that Sunday round that led to two wins in two tournaments after that including a major", he said. I could and should have finished at least in the under-par zone.

Day began his round with a dropped shot early on on day two but a stunning tap-in eagle at the par-5 seventh hole at Quail Hollow preceded three consecutive birdies as he raced to 5-under-par. Starting at 10, he had two birdies and one bogey and parred his last 10 holes.

"I just had a couple of bad swings, missed a couple of greens in the wrong spots and if you do that you have no hope".

"I actually played fairly well, and then 3-putt and hit the ball in the water and 3-putted the last", Fowler said after his round. So I hit a 6-iron.

USA's Jordan Spieth, aiming to become the youngest player to complete the career Grand Slam, was one over with two holes of the second round to play and two over for the tournament.

"It was really the only option I had", McIlroy said.

They speak of Southern hospitality a lot in these parts, but you won't find much of a warm welcome when it comes to the new first hole they've rolled out at Quail Hollow Club for the PGA Championship.

Jimmy Walker (Oklahoma City native): The defending champion is tied for 97th at 8-over 150, but improved by 12 shots on Friday with a 2-under 69 that included five birdies and three bogeys.

McGirt, who teed off at 1:10 p.m. Friday, completed 11 holes before the horn sounded while he was preparing for a putt on the par-4 third hole.

In the first round, Spieth nearly lost a chance to connect when he birdied two consecutive holes before putting two birdies to get back into the chase for another Grand Slam.

McIlroy managed to muster back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth (his 16th and 17th) to get back to two over and alleviate the threat of missing the cut, but he has plenty of work to do. Kisner and Thorbjorn were tied at 4-under par after Round One. It features the top three golfers in the tournament.
